Visiting Suwon Hwaseong Fortress by Private Car from Seoul

Visiting Suwon Hwaseong Fortress by Private Car from Seoul

Suwon Hwaseong Fortress makes an easy half-day or full-day trip from Seoul by private car, because the drive usually takes about an hour and a driver can drop you at one gate and collect you at another. The fortress wall loops around the old city centre, so walking a section of it and visiting the restored palace inside fits comfortably into a single day. Leaving Seoul in the morning helps you avoid the heaviest traffic and the midday heat in summer.

Hwaseong Fortress is a late eighteenth-century walled fortress in Suwon, built under King Jeongjo of the Joseon dynasty and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. Its walls, gates and watchtowers combine traditional Korean design with defensive ideas that were new at the time.

How long does the drive from Seoul take?

The drive from central Seoul to Suwon usually takes about an hour, but weekday rush hour and weekend afternoons can add a good deal more. Leaving between nine and ten in the morning tends to avoid the worst of the commuter traffic. Returning in the late afternoon on weekends can be slow because many Seoul residents head back into the city at the same time.

A private car saves you from changing trains and walking between distant sites. The main sights are spread around the wall, and a driver can move you from one gate to the next while you rest between walks.

How much of the wall should you walk?

The full wall circuit is several kilometres long and includes steep stretches, so most visitors walk only part of it. A popular approach is to start near a hilltop section for the views and walk downhill, with the driver waiting at the end point. This keeps the walk enjoyable for travellers who are not used to long climbs.

Comfortable shoes are important, as some paths are uneven and steps can be steep. In summer, bring water and a hat, since much of the wall has little shade. In winter, the walkways can be icy after snow, so check conditions before setting out.

What else can you add to the day?

The streets inside and around the fortress have cafes and traditional restaurants, and Suwon is well known in Korea for grilled marinated ribs. A long lunch in the city centre fits naturally between the palace and an afternoon walk. Families sometimes add a short ride on the small tourist train that runs near parts of the fortress, where operating hours allow.
