Golf Etiquette in Korea for International Visitors: Caddies, Tee Times and Clubhouse Culture

Playing golf in Korea differs from many other countries: most courses require caddies and carts, tee times are tightly scheduled, and the clubhouse is an important part of the experience, including changing rooms, bathhouses, and meals. Understanding these customs helps international visitors enjoy the round and make a good impression on Korean hosts or business partners.

Key differences to expect

CustomWhat to know
CaddiesUsually mandatory, often one per group
CartsTypically included and driven by the caddie
Caddie feePaid separately, often in cash
Tee timesStrict, arrive early
ClubhouseChanging rooms and baths are common

Caddies help with distances, club selection, and reading greens. Being polite and patient with them is part of good etiquette.

Arrive early

Plan to arrive well before your tee time so you can check in, change, and warm up. Korean courses run on tight schedules, and late arrivals can delay the whole group. Many courses are located outside Seoul, so allow enough travel time and consider traffic on weekend mornings.

Dress code

Collared shirts and tailored trousers or shorts are standard. Some courses are strict about jeans or overly casual clothing. Bring a change of clothes for after the round, since many players shower and change before lunch or dinner in the clubhouse.

Playing with business hosts

Golf is a common way to build relationships in Korean business. Keep pace with the group, compliment good shots, and follow the host's lead on breaks and meals. Small gestures, such as offering drinks at the halfway house, are appreciated.

Getting to the course

Because courses are often an hour or more from the city, a private van makes it easy to carry clubs and travel together. Share your tee time with the driver so they can calculate the pickup time. More golf travel tips are available in our other guides.
