Car Seating Etiquette in Korea: Where Should the Most Senior Guest Sit?

In Korean business protocol, the most senior guest is traditionally seated in the rear seat diagonally behind the driver, on the passenger side, which is considered the safest and most comfortable position and is easiest for getting in and out at the curb. The next most senior person sits beside them in the rear, and a junior host or assistant takes the front passenger seat. Knowing these customs helps hosts show respect to visiting partners.

When the host is driving their own car, customs differ: the senior guest often sits in the front passenger seat beside the host as a sign of companionship.

Getting in and out

The senior guest should be able to step directly onto the curb. Chauffeurs position the car so the passenger-side rear door faces the entrance. Hosts often open the door or wait for the senior guest to enter first.

Seating in vans

In a van, the most comfortable captain's seats in the middle row are usually offered to the most senior guests. The front passenger seat is again for a junior staff member who can communicate with the driver.

When guests prefer otherwise

Protocol is a guideline, not a rule. Some guests prefer the front seat for motion sickness or to talk with the driver. A polite host offers the traditional seat but respects the guest's choice.

Planning ahead

For delegations, prepare a seating plan that matches the vehicle list, so everyone knows which car and seat to take. This avoids awkward moments at the hotel entrance. More business protocol tips are available in our other guides.
